A Note from Your School Counselor...

My name is Sarah Vondle, and I am the sole counselor at GMS. The counselor exists to serve the students, faculty, staff, families, and all stakeholders in the community, to ultimately facilitate positive development and a safe school climate. With the multitude of challenges that middle school students face today, from personal exploration of self-identity to physical changes to peer pressure, this is a crucial time to focus on the social, emotional, and academic issues among the student body.

Implementing a successful comprehensive school counseling program entails providing a myriad of services to ALL students, with the main goal of promoting self-advocacy, intrinsic motivation, and a sense of competence and confidence. As the counselor, helping students to navigate through many challenging developmental issues becomes the forefront for services. Some specific services include conflict-mediation and guidance lessons in the classrooms regarding bullying/cyber bullying, sexual harassment, depression and suicide, and tolerance/awareness. Individual and group counseling that focus on positive peer and adult relationships, study skills, decision-making skills, individual student planning, connection of classroom learning with practical applications, goal-setting strategies, and coping skills are also among the role of the counselor.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me at sarah.vondle@aps.edu or 344-1647 Ext. 54508
